Animal Report

Animal Report
Theme Shark

Introduction

Today I’m talking about Sharks why because  this is an animal that interesters me and I am also teaching you about Sharks lives.

Appearance

The spined pygmy shark, a deep-sea shark, is one of the smallest at only about 7-8 inches, while the whale shark is the largest shark, and fish, at about 50 feet in length. Only 39 shark species are known to grow more than 3 m (10 ft.) while 176 species stay under 1 m (39 in.) in length. The spined pygmy shark (Squaliolus laticaudus) is probably the smallest of all sharks. Females reach about 18 cm (7.1 in.) in length while mature males may only be 15 cm (5.9 in.) long. For most shark speices, Females grow around 25% more than Males. The largest batoid is the manta ray (manta birostris) which reaches widths more than 6.7 m (22 ft).

Habitat

Sharks have adapted to living in a wide range of aquatic habitats at various temperatures. While some species inhabit shallow, coastal regions, others live in deep waters, on the ocean floor and in the open ocean. Some species, like the bull shark, are even known to swim in salt, fresh and brackish waters.

Diet

Most species of shark eat things like fish, crustaceans, mollusks, plankton, krill, marine mammals and other sharks. Sharks also have a very acute sense of smell that allows them to detect blood in the water from miles away.

Enemies

Think sharks are dangerous?  The most dangerous sharks are the Great White shark, the Tiger shark, the Hammerhead shark, the Mako shark and the Bull shark.  On average, there are only about 100 shark attacks each year and only 10 of those result in a human death. You should check it out from their perspective, though!  People kill thousands of sharks in a year for sport and for food.  Shark skins are used to make products like any other leather would be.  Up until the 1950's, shark livers were used as a vitamin A supplement.  Shark fin soup and shark steaks are both eaten in many countries (Mako, seen in the top photo, is the most popular in the United States).

Life Cycle

Each shark species has its own expected life span and it is difficult to set an average for sharks as a whole. However, very broadly speaking, most sharks live for between 20 and 30 years. The Spiny Dogfish lives for over a century, and some Whale Sharks have been known to do the same.
Unlike most other animals, sharks generally do not care for their young. As soon as pups are born into the water, they swim away and care for themselves. Some sharks give birth to litters of up to 100 babies at a time, while others may have as few as two or three. The Great White Shark gives birth to approximately three to 14 pups at a time. In almost all cases, all of the pups are beable and well-developed. This is in stark contrast to many other animals (such as several fish species and some turtles), which give birth to large numbers of ill-developed young (in effect, producing quantity over quality).

Behaviours
Most sharks are especially active in the evening and night when they hunt. Some sharks migrate over great distances to feed and breed. This can take them over entire ocean basins. While some shark species are solitary, others display social behavior at various levels. Hammerhead sharks, for instance, school during mating season around seamounts and islands. Some shark species, like the great white shark, attack and surprise their prey, usually seals and sea lions, from below. Species that dwell on the ocean floor have developed the ability to bottom-feed. Others attack schooling fish in a feeding frenzy, while large sharks like the whale and basking sharks filter feed by swimming through the ocean with their mouths open wide, filtering large quantities of plankton and krill.

Conclusion

So if you like my report write a shark report too like I did if you know how to write a report. So if you forgot what my report was on today it was a shark because this animal mostly interesters me most out of all of the animals. Next time I’m going to write a report on something that interests me.

Home learning story starter Tsunami 02.27.2017

It All happened a gloomy grey afternoon with a bus full of tourist who got of the bus and went to the end of a pier to see the seaside view. They saw the man surfing then all of a sudden the man disappeared into the huge wave that was coming towards us. With a shook of horror the wave was getting bigger and sounded like a train going one hundred miles per second. We tried to run but there was nowhere to hide and no mountains to climb. Let this be warning you should never watch waves of a Tsunami.  Run the opposite way go to the highest ground and don’t look back.

Laserforce

Yesterday on the 28th of may Sunday I went to Rico birthday yes your other buddy first he picked me up and in his car was Tyrell and he invited me Tyrell, Nikora, and him. After we went to Rico’s house and he has a dog named Rocky and he also has five fidget spinners and a hoverboard. After that we went to go pick up Nikora in flaxmere and then we went to Laserforce in Napier and we got the burger party meal and we got the birthday party room and on the table was a membership card we had to sign it but if someone already has one they don’t have to sign it because they have already signed up and our code names were mine was Ninja master, Rico’s was Ninja boy, Nikora was Ninja star, and Tyrell was Ninja star 248 and also he copied Nikora, and Tamara is Rico’s sister and Tamara was Miss Warrior. Rico’s dad payed for us and we all got to play 3 games but first we had to wait for the people that were already in it so this lady that worked there gave us free credits and we got to play 5 games. An after that we finally got to play a game for the first game we played team deathmatch and some how threw the game we played me and Nikora switch teams to red and I was shooting the little kids and they thought it was there friends in the other team but it was actually me shooting them and I kept shooting over and over and after that we had lunch I had a cheeseburger, chips, and a extra large Fanta drink. After that we played individual I came last because I was not the best at playing laserforce but the next one we played was easy as because our team went in and we keep on shooting them when they come in even though the game hasn’t started I was coming second but then lots of other people came in halfway threw the game and then at the end of the game I saw up on the leaderboard I came 4th and also our team won.

As I tried to gallop far, far, far away this monstrou wave caught me and I kicked the water and I got away. I t was a glaring scorching hot day to go to the beautiful peaceful beach. The blue sparkling ocean is powerful like a tsunami. It feels freezing like a snowy wintery day. A minute later my mum called me to come for the delicious lunch sausages in bread it was magnificent. Ocean Poems

Ocean Poem
My subject is a shell

Its appearance  is giant like a solid rock. It looks like a living fossil. It also looks like a colourful rainbow. It feels like a smooth blanket. Its texture feel like a spongy sponge. It also feels like a rough humongous stone. It sounds like rough waves crashing on the sand. It  sounds like a creaking door door opening.  It also sounds like  a bird tweeting in my ear. It reminds me of my uncle giving me a special shell once.  The shell is tough like a old wooden tree. I found the shell by napier beach by a enormous stick. I think what happened to it in its life was lots of people hurtled past the shell and didn’t pick it up. I think what may happen to it next is someone might pick it up. I wonder if it was a teeny ant headquarters for ant super heroes.

Noun Work

Common Nouns Week 3 - Term 1

A  noun is a naming word.

Common nouns are nouns that refer to non-specific persons, places, objects or periods of time. For example: mother, student, kitchen, paddock, house, hat, week, century.

  • The freshly cooked chocolate cake had been baked in the oven.Noun

  • The student grabbed the encyclopedia from the shelf to help with research.

  • The mountain seemed huge as the people gazed from the lookout.

2. Use the common nouns in the box below to complete the following passage.

Shannon and Ashley walked down the rutted track to the beach They passed the broken utility shed and jumped the farm rays.shannon lay down on her towel to catch some water while Ashley slipped off her jandals and ran into the cool, inviting creek.

Adjective work

Adjectives Week 4 - Term 1

An adjective is a ‘describing’ word.

Adjectives are the words that we use to describe nouns. They help us add meaning to our chosen noun by describing the colour, size, shape etc. For instance, the word ‘car’ is a noun. But we, as writers, need to explain more about what the car is like. To do this we use an adjective.

Underline the adjectives in the following sentences.

  • The yellow clock ticked merrily.

  • Jonah picked up the ugly, black spider.

  • The book we had to read for English was huge.

  • The old man crossed the busy road at the pedestrian crossing.

  • Greer loved the look of the regular waves at Piha today. It was going to be awesome surf!

2. Complete the sentence by choosing the appropriate adjective from the box below.

Fascinating    busy   dark   tall   blazing   pink   front   almighty   freezing   heavy   blue   straight

  • David quietly made his way through the dark room.
  • The Sky Tower stood tall and straight on the Auckland skyline.
  • A pink blanket smothered the sparks leaping from the blazing fire.
  • There was an almighty bang as the front door swung shut.
  • Te Papa is a fascinating, busy place to visit for the school holidays.

3. Adjectives are exciting words to use but too often we are stuck in the same mode using the same old, boring words. See if you can use the different resources in this classroom to help you find better words for the following.

Red
Huge
Sky
Big
Black
Creature
Dark
Shadow
Redwoods
Wet
Soaky
Towel
Sharp
Pointy
Teeth
Smelly
Stinky
Socks

4. Replace the bold adjective in each sentence with an even better one.

  • My Dad is great. He loves to sail tiny yachts and enjoys working in our big garden but I really hate it when he wears his floppy sun hat and floral shirt.

  • I a a ballet dancer. I am elegant and graceful. I am like a beautiful swan. My tutu is made up of layers of floaty tulle and my shoes are a rose pink. I twirl and leap in time to the classical music.
